What Did Procuros Just Announce?

Procuros, a Hamburg-based supply chain connectivity platform, closed a €20 million Series A round on October 6, 2026. The round was led by XAnge, with grocery-retailer-backed fund W23 Global joining as a new investor and existing backers Point Nine, Creandum, SquareOne and b2venture returning alongside several angel investors [1].

The raise brings Procuros's total funding to €34 million. The company will put the money into its AI-native connectivity platform and into growing its trading network beyond Germany, Austria and Switzerland [1]. More than 300 companies already run on the platform, moving in excess of €3 billion in annualized order volume, with named customers including Breuninger, Chefs Culinar, KoRo, flaconi, The Quality Group and Hitschler [1].

Why Are Investors Betting Against EDI Now?

Investors are backing Procuros because B2B trade still runs on electronic data interchange (EDI) connections and manual workarounds that were never designed for software agents to operate autonomously. Gartner's forecast that AI agents will intermediate over $15 trillion in B2B purchases by 2028 only works if the data each agent touches is clean, structured and trustworthy [2].

That is a harder problem than it sounds. Digital Commerce 360 points out that ecommerce ordering and EDI document exchange are increasingly converging inside the same operational layer, with AI now applied to automate data mapping, catch transaction errors and support forecasting [3]. A supplier that cannot integrate cleanly with a retailer's systems risks falling off preferred vendor lists regardless of price or product quality [3].

Procuros is positioning itself as infrastructure for that shift. Its pitch: connect once, and the platform handles translation, validation and routing to every trading partner, whatever system or format that partner runs [1].

How Does the Platform Actually Work?

Procuros splits its offering by side of the transaction:

The company frames this as a prerequisite for agentic trade: an AI agent placing or reconciling an order is only as reliable as the data feed it reads from. That framing matches Gartner's own caveat on agent-intermediated B2B purchasing, which assumes systems built around "verifiable data feeds and standardized trust frameworks" that let agents negotiate and execute transactions with minimal human intervention [2].

  • For suppliers: automates the flow of orders, shipping notices, invoices and logistics documents directly into ERP systems, cutting out manual re-entry [1].
  • For retailers: offers a connectivity layer covering EDI links, e-invoicing and automated invoice reconciliation across the supplier base [1].

Replace EDI or Wrap It?

Not every vendor is approaching this the same way. Some are replacing EDI outright; others are keeping it and adding an AI layer on top.

“AI agents are only as good as the infrastructure they run on.”
Patrick Thelen, CEO and Co-Founder, Procuros [1]

Tangentia, which added an AI agent to its EDI platform in December 2025, reported that pilot customers cut trading-partner onboarding times by as much as 50% without replacing their existing EDI systems [4]. The two approaches target the same pain point from opposite ends: one treats EDI as the problem, the other treats it as the asset worth preserving.

XAnge's Valerie Bures-Bönström framed the investment in similar terms, saying Procuros has proven its model at scale in the DACH region and that the opportunity now is to build an entirely new category for global B2B trade [1].

What Should B2B Commerce Leaders Take From This?

For a VP of e-commerce or CTO running a B2B operation, the Procuros round is a signal to look at connectivity infrastructure before investing further in agent-facing commerce features. Three questions are worth asking now:

B2B ecommerce and EDI are no longer separate systems to manage independently. Digital Commerce 360's reporting on this convergence notes that integration platforms are becoming intelligent data pipelines supporting decisions across order-to-cash and procure-to-pay, not just static file transfers [3]. Procuros's raise suggests investors see the connectivity layer as the real bottleneck between B2B commerce today and the autonomous trade that forecasts describe.

  1. 1Where does our order and invoice data actually live, and how clean is it? Gartner's $15 trillion forecast assumes agents can trust the data they act on [2].
  2. 2Are we choosing to replace legacy EDI or to wrap it? Both paths are being funded and built out in parallel right now [1][4].
  3. 3Which trading partners are the long tail? Onboarding speed for smaller suppliers, not just top accounts, is where connectivity platforms claim the biggest gains [4].
