From Legacy Stack to Unified Commerce

Founded over 40 years ago, Road Runner Sports grew from a family-run catalog into the largest running and walking gear retailer in the U.S. But their ecommerce platform, Oracle ATG Web Commerce, had reached end-of-life. Heavily dependent on third-party services and difficult to scale, the stack made innovation slow and operational costs high. Road Runner needed a commerce foundation capable of supporting stores, loyalty, payments, and digital experiences under one modern architecture. Road Runner Sports selected VTEX, partnering with implementation specialist Pivotree to build a future-ready digital commerce foundation. VTEX's API-first, headless platform enabled a modular migration — moving the ecommerce engine first, with a clear roadmap to adopt VTEX-native Intelligent Search, CMS, and FastStore over time. With VTEX, Road Runner Sports consolidated core commerce onto a single platform, unified online and in-store inventory across 55+ locations, and brought their signature VIP Family loyalty program into a modern, flexible system. The result is a commerce foundation built for the miles ahead — composable where it matters, unified where it drives efficiency.

"With VTEX, we don't have to choose between flexibility and speed. We can stay composable where it matters, but unify where it drives efficiency."

Built for Unified Commerce, From Day One

Road Runner Sports required a platform that could handle the full complexity of a 40-year-old retail operation. VTEX's APIs connected online inventory to 55+ physical stores, enabling seamless buy-online-pickup-in-store experiences. The Unstructured Attributes App solved long-standing catalog performance issues by enabling bulk management of 30+ attributes per SKU, syncing cleanly with Oracle ERP. And VTEX's headless checkout — supporting PayPal Express, Apple Pay, and Chase credit cards — streamlined the buying experience while tokenized payments ensured VIP subscription renewals ran securely. The VIP Family Program, the heartbeat of Road Runner's business, was integrated directly using VTEX's Gift Card Protocol with two providers: one for traditional gift cards and one for rewards cash. With the foundation in place, Road Runner's roadmap includes VTEX Intelligent Search, FastStore, and marketplace integrations — giving the team a clear path to accelerate further.

"We partnered with RRS and VTEX to replace their aging commerce platform with a modern headless architecture — giving them the unified systems, data, flexibility, scalability, and resilience needed to grow in a fast-changing market."
